The Office of the New York State Attorney General (OAG) is seeking an attorney to serve as an Assistant Solicitor General in the New York City Appeals and Opinions Bureau. The bureau represents New York state, its agencies, and its officers, in appellate litigation on a wide range of constitutional, statutory, and common law issues affecting the interests of the state. An Assistant Solicitor General should expect to brief and argue a substantial caseload of appeals before the state and federal appellate courts, draft amicus curiae briefs on behalf of the state and multistate coalitions, and make recommendations concerning proposed appeals and amicus filings.
The work of the bureau arises from every part of OAG’s work, including the defense of state statutes, programs, and officers, and the enforcement of laws protecting consumers, investors, workers, civil rights, the environment, and public health and safety.
Qualifications:
Applicants must reside in (or intend to soon become a resident of) New York state and be admitted to practice law in New York state. In addition, the Public Officers Law requires that OAG attorneys be citizens of the United States. A two (2) year commitment upon being hired is a condition of employment.
New York State agencies, departments, and public authorities provide services across healthcare, engineering, administration, public safety, the trades, and other areas.
