Civil Service Title- Assistant Civil Engineer * IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION CANDIDATE MUST BE SERVING PERMANENTLY IN THE TITLE OR BE REACHABLE ON THE OPEN-COMPETITIVE LIST EXAM# 7006 The New York City Department of Transportation, Division of Bridges is responsible for managing the full life cycle of over 800 bridges and tunnels and over 600 retaining walls, ensuring safety of the public and ensuring mobility for all users. Team members may work on major project designs, oversee construction, oversee maintenance activities, perform engineering reviews and quality assurance tasks on some of the most iconic and complex projects in the City. This position will report to the Bridge Inspection unit, and will: Serve as a Senior Bridge Inspector in the Bridge Inspection & Management unit of the Bureau of Maintenance, Inspection, and Operations.
Under supervision, performs In-depth, routine, special, and emergency inspections using a variety of equipment and tools. The job requires inspecting elevated structures over roadways, railroads, and water, as well as tunnels, in a confined space, using equipment such as a bucket truck, man-lift, ladder, and snooper in all weather conditions.
Prepares bridge condition sketches for thorough documentation. Produces bridge inspection reports per the accepted New York State bridge inspection standards under the direction of a team leader.
Identifies and prioritizes potential hazards.
Prepares structural and safety flags will all necessary plans, drawings, and technical specifications. The position requires an employee to drive an inspection van for fieldwork. May assist the Director of Bridge Inspection in the office with bridge inspection-related work. Maybe required to work evenings, nights, and weekends.
Performs other related duties Preferred skills Ability to perform inspections in all weather conditions which will include nights and weekends. A strong background in AutoCAD and MS office suite are required. A driver's license may be required for certain assignments. Preference will be given to candidate who has a driver's license valid in the state of New York with no restrictions, and has the ability to drive city owned vehicles.
This license must be maintained throughout the duration of employment in this position.
