Job description

Hours: Full-Time – 35 Hours Work Location: 30-30 Thomson Avenue, NY, 11101 Only candidates who are permanent in the Administrative Engineer title or those who are reachable on the DDC promotional list (exam #5564), or the open-competitive list (exam #5163) may apply. Please indicate a copy of your Notice of Result card or indicate if you are already permanent in the title. If you do not meet the previously mentioned civil service criteria, you will not be considered for an interview.

The NYC Department of Design and Construction, Division of Infrastructure is currently seeking a Deputy Director to join the Construction Management 5 – Brooklyn – Section

  • Reporting directly to the Director, the selected candidate will be responsible for overseeing an annual capital program valued at over $300 million, comprising multiple construction projects. They will lead a team of professionals and technical construction staff supervising capital-funded projects, including sewer, water main, roadway, sidewalk, pedestrian ramp, plaza, climate resiliency, and public space improvements.

Responsibilities will include reviewing construction plans, communicating with sponsor agencies, private utility firms, and other stakeholders to resolve field-related operational issues, and ensuring contract compliance and timely contractor & consultant payments. The candidate will schedule and conduct final inspections and participate in various agency task forces, including those focused on Change Order initiatives, project documentation, quality assurance, and forecasting quantities for the Yearly Mayoral Report. In addition, the Deputy Director will represent the borough in meetings with utility companies, city, state, and federal agencies as needed. They will train staff in fulfilling the team’s responsibilities, support recruitment efforts, and assist the Assistant Commissioner and Director in advancing the team's objectives.

Additionally, educational credentials must be from a U.S. Department of Education-recognized accredited institution. Credentials from foreign institutions require independent equivalency verification from an approved evaluation service. Minimum Qualifications

  • A valid New York State License as a Professional Engineer.
  • Six (6) years of full-time satisfactory experience in chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, or plan examining work, at least two (2) years of which must have been in an executive, managerial, or administrative capacity.

Preferred Skills

Please note the following preferred skills for this position:

  • Must have robust supervision experience.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Knowledge relevant to infrastructure construction work (i.e., roadway, sewer, and/or water main)
  • Familiarity with NYC DOT, NYS DOT, NYC DEP specifications, MUTCD, and AASHTO standards
  • Comprehensive understanding of the NYC infrastructure system and current engineering practices
  • Proficiency in Primavera P6 scheduling.
  • Envision Sustainability Professional (ENV SP) credential (Optional)
  • Valid driver's license (Require)
  • Personal vehicle (Prefer)

Residency Requirement

New York City Residency is not required for this position.
