Job description

The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Performance Improvement and Management Services is seeking candidates for a Facility Operations Assistant 1, SG-6 position in the Office of Facilities and Business Services. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Perform a variety of tasks utilizing power and manual hand tools including but not limited to saws, hammers, drills, sanders, and stationary power tools;
  • Perform routine repetitive semi-skilled maintenance and repair of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, masonry and other facility services and equipment;
  • Perform general grounds maintenance tasks such as clearing sites, mowing lawns, trimming, and removing trees and shrubs, maintaining roads and sidewalks, snow and ice removal, collection/pick-up of trash and other obstructions from the building and surrounding areas;
  • Perform general facilities maintenance such as cleaning common areas, offices and restrooms, painting and moving furniture;
  • Troubleshoot facility, equipment and/or machinery problems and work to resolve concerns in a timely manner;
  • Perform routine repairs and maintenance on equipment and facility structures;
  • Ability to work comfortably at heights such as climbing ladders, working on scaffolds, platforms, and lifts;
  • Push, pull, lift, and carry heavy objects and equipment (50+ lbs.);
  • Operate a motor vehicle, other motorized equipment, and a variety of light mechanized construction equipment including manual/electrical pallet jack;
  • Effectively communicate both verbally and in writing, including assessing project requirements and conveying them clearly to supervisors and team members as needed; and
  • Collaborate with team members and independently in accordance with supervisory guidance and direction.

Minimum Qualifications

Non-Competitive Minimum Qualifications:

Labor Class: There are no education or experience qualifications for this class. Applicants must be physically able to perform the tasks of the position and be able to understand and carry out written or oral instructions. When required to operate motor vehicles, incumbents must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle being operated.

Reassignment: Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service as for Facility Operations Assistant
