Primary duties include coordination and implementation of Region 6 surveys (e.g., Brook Trout pond, St. Lawrence River, and Lake Ontario’s Eastern Basin assessments; others as assigned), and leading implementation of a Tug Hill trout stream habitat project. Additional tasks include: supervision of habitat project construction and repair, maintenance of sign posting including inventory and tracking system; coordination of contaminant/disease collections and sample submission; ensure high quality of data collection and timely entry into the Statewide Fisheries Database; age structure preparation and age determination; data analysis and reporting; provide logistical and direct support for equipment procurement and maintenance; assist with fish propagation and stocking related activities (e.g., Lake Sturgeon and Little Tupper egg takes); complete public access site assessments; plan and implement education/outreach activities as assigned; participate in fish kill events; and perform intermediate GIS tasks. Will supervise work crews consisting of seasonal staff, volunteers, and interns stationed at the Brownville office.
This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).
For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.
At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
Three years of experience in fisheries, wildlife, or marine resources management; fish or wildlife propagation; a living marine resources program; or a fish, wildlife, or marine research program.
Substitution: one year of college coursework including at least 12 semester credit hours in fisheries, marine resources, wildlife management, or a related field, may substitute for one year of the experience described.
