Forensic Scientist 1 (DNA)
Will be familiar with and aware of biological analyses, as well as analyses performed in other laboratory sections.
Must successfully complete a biological sciences training program and demonstrate competency and/or proficiency ahead of authorization to perform production analyses.
Will be expected to perform appropriate handling, preservation and/or analysis on evidence or convicted offender samples in accordance with procedures.
Analyze submitted samples using instrumentation, validated methods, and automated systems to record results, while adhering to all protocols and policies.
Interprets data to generate results, creates reports of findings, conducts technical reviews, and provides testimony when requested.
Maintains and enhances expertise and technical proficiency in the field of forensics.
Forensic Scientist 2 (DNA)
Will be proficient in all duties of a Forensic Scientist 1 (DNA)
Will perform analysis on evidence or convicted offender samples which are technically of limited complexity utilizing established procedures. When standard procedures are not applicable, the Forensic Scientist 2 (DNA) will discuss alternate or modified methodology with the appropriate technically responsible staff and/or supervisors prior to conducting analysis.
Will be expected to maintain and enhance expertise and technical proficiency in the field of forensic Biological Sciences.
Forensic Scientists performing DNA analysis must successfully obtain and maintain access to the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) which requires a background check and self-disclosure of any illegal use of drugs or controlled substances not in accordance with Federal laws, even if permissible under New York State laws.
Forensic Scientist 3 (DNA)
Will be proficient in all duties of a Forensic Scientist 2 (DNA)
Will be assigned analyses of complex cases and/or convicted offender samples and will exercise considerable independent judgement in evaluating and proposing, as needed, possible alternative methods of analysis (subject to technical approvals).
Will exercise their expertise and will inform the technically responsible staff and/or supervisors of any unusual or unexpected developments that may occur during analysis.
Expected to participate in quality control/quality assurance activities and perform troubleshooting and maintenance tasks within the section.
Expected to participate in projects and initiatives such as training and validation.
Stays up-to-date on developments within the field of forensic DNA analysis.
May be required to assume the duties of Supervisor of Forensic Services (DNA)

Must have successfully completed coursework covering either population genetics or statistics.

Must have successfully completed coursework totaling at least 9 credit hours in biology or chemistry-related areas that provide an understanding of the foundation of DNA analysis.
Must have successfully completed coursework covering either population genetics or statistics.
All transcripts will be reviewed to determine eligibility.
AND
Have a minimum of eighteen months satisfactory experience performing the duties of a Forensic Scientist 1 (DNA) or its equivalent in another laboratory.
Forensic Scientist 3 (DNA)
Must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in the natural sciences, physical sciences, or forensic science. Forensic science degrees must include upper-level coursework in biology or chemistry with laboratory work.
Must have successfully completed coursework totaling at least 9 credit hours in biology or chemistry-related areas that provide an understanding of the foundation of DNA analysis.
Must have successfully completed coursework covering either population genetics or statistics.
All transcripts will be reviewed to determine eligibility.
Any employee assigned to any lab will be required to undergo additional pre- employment screenings including a urine drug screening and polygraph.
Minimum qualifications must be met by the time of appointment.
