Job summary

The NYC Department of Design and Construction, Division of Infrastructure is currently seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to join the Engineering Services – Specifications team11. Under the supervision of the Director, the successful candidate will evaluate the appropriate and most cost-effective foundation support system, and the bearing capacity of shallow and deep foundations. Other key responsibilities include performing geotechnical studies/projects in subsurface investigations; soil/foundation engineering; pile analysis and design; retaining walls; bridge structures; settlement analysis; lateral earth pressures; and slope stability.

Additionally, the Geotechnical Engineer will perform forensic engineering; site investigations; write reports; and provide geotechnical engineering support during construction.

Please note: All candidates must be currently authorized to work full-time in the United States (U.S.). Minimum Qualifications

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, business administration, or public administration, and five years of full-time satisfactory experience in the planning, administering or expediting of engineering design, and/or construction, or coordinating a very large engineering project, two years of which must have been in an administrative, managerial, executive or supervisory capacity; or
  • A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and nine years of experience as described in "1" above; two years of which must have been in an administrative, managerial, executive or supervisory capacity; or
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above. An accredited Master's degree in one of the disciplines described in "1" above, a law degree, or a valid New York State license as a Professional Engineer or Registered Architect or Landscape Architect may be substituted for one year of the required experience. However, all candidates must have the two years of the administrative, managerial, executive or supervisory experience as described in "1" above.

Preferred Skills

Please note the following preferred skills for this position:

  • Candidates must have at least six years’ experience in geotechnical engineering
  • Must have robust supervision experience.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Knowledge relevant to infrastructure construction work (i.e., roadway, sewer, and/or water main)
  • Familiarity with NYC DOT, NYS DOT, NYC DEP specifications, MUTCD, and AASHTO standards
  • Comprehensive understanding of the NYC infrastructure system and current engineering practices
  • Proficiency in Primavera P6 scheduling. (Optional)
  • Envision Sustainability Professional (ENV SP) credential (Preferred)
  • Valid driver's license (Required)
  • Personal vehicle (Optional)
