The Transportation Planning and Management Division (TPM) is responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods on the City's streets, supporting the larger goals of economic and social vitality for people living, working, and doing business in New York City. The Division’s responsibilities include planning, street design, technical analysis, signs, transit development, freight mobility and markings, ensuring the safety of motor vehicle occupants, pedestrians, and cyclists. The Research, Implementation, and Safety unit (RIS) is a multi-disciplinary team dedicated to making the streets of New York City safer for all users as part of Vision Zero, a citywide policy striving to eliminate serious injuries and fatalities from traffic crashes.
DOT seeks a candidate to serve as an Inspector for the School Safety group in RIS. School Safety is responsible for improving safety near K-12 schools throughout New York City. The group redesigns streets next to schools with a goal of reducing youth injuries, improving safety and accessibility, and encouraging non-motorized transportation in all five boroughs. The unit manages all curb regulations and signage next to NYC K-12 schools, including the School Slow Zone program.
The Inspector will be responsible for conducting field investigations and performing data collection to support School Safety programs, including the installation of School Slow Zones, school loading zones, and other specialized safety projects such as street redesigns and projects to improve child visibility. This work will help the team deliver on the ambitious goal of Mayor Mamdani’s administration to install a 15-mile-per-hour School Slow Zone next to every K-12 school in NYC by the end of
Additional duties to be performed consist of data entry, using City-specific transportation software (e.g., SIMS to create sign orders), assisting with data analysis, maintenance of databases, and preparation of relevant forms, reports, correspondence, and logs. Interested candidates must be willing to work outside in all weather conditions.

License Requirements Must possess a motor vehicle driver license, valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
Requirements for Assignment Level II To be considered for assignment to Assignment Level II, candidates must have, in addition to meeting the Qualification Requirements above: one additional year of fulltime satisfactory experience working in Assignment Level I; or one additional year of full time satisfactory experience as described in "1" above for a total of three years of experience. Such experience must include supervising the regulation of vehicular traffic or the conduct of traffic studies.
Requirements for Assignment Level III To be considered for assignment to Assignment Level III candidates must have, in addition to meeting the Qualification Requirements above: two additional years of full time satisfactory experience working in Assignment Levels I and II for a total of four years of experience; or two additional years of full time satisfactory experience as described in "1" above, at least one of which must have been in supervising vehicular traffic regulation and control or in conducting traffic studies.
New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
