Job description

The New York City Department of Probation is dedicated to improving public safety by supporting individuals on probation.

DOP uses research-based practices to supervise and support people on probation and help prevent further interactions with the justice system.

By expanding access to education and gainful employment opportunities, healthcare, family supports, and civic engagement, DOP empowers New Yorkers under their supervision to lead safe and thriving lives.

The Department of Probation is seeking to hire (2) Investigators.

Under the direction of the Internal Control Office, the Investigators will conduct sensitive and complex fact-finding inquiries involving Department employees, operations, and other matters referred to the Office. • Conduct difficult and complex investigations into allegations of employee misconduct.
  • Interview witnesses and subjects; preparing reports on investigation findings.
  • Make recommendations to the Department Advocate on appropriate disciplinary action upon completion of investigations.
  • Work closely with and liaise with the NYC Department of Investigation.
  • Perform surveillance on employees related to allegations of time and leave abuse and residency.
  • Utilize investigatory databases, public records, telephone records and social media platforms.
  • Testifying at administrative disciplinary hearings and trials.
  • Monitor all criminal cases involving Department employees.
  • Conduct field investigations and surveillance, as required.
  • May perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and four years of satisfactory full-time experience in one or more of the fields of accounting, auditing, correction administration, criminal justice administration and planning, forensic science, and security, or in a major operational area of the agency in which the appointment is to be made; or
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college; or
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above.

Preferred Skills

Investigations of employee misconduct or public-sector personnel in law enforcement or government oversight settings. Experience with background investigations, candidate suitability reviews, site inspections, and internal controls. Advanced narrative report writing, complex witness-statement analysis, and executive briefings. Prior supervisory experience or a relevant graduate degree.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
