Job description

The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Performance Improvement and Management Services is seeking candidates for a Janitor position in the Office of Facilities and Business Services. The incumbent of this position will perform a variety of cleaning and unskilled maintenance tasks for one or more State buildings, adjacent grounds, and walkways. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Serves as a working supervisor and supervises the shift’s lower-level cleaning personnel. Assigns tasks; provides instructions and assistance; demonstrates proper cleaning procedures; reviews work in progress and upon completion; monitors time and attendance; and evaluates performance;
  • Polishes wood and metal surfaces, fixtures, furniture, and equipment;
  • Checks and fills supplies and equipment functionality. Notifies supervisor of low supply levels, equipment malfunction, and building maintenance issues noted during cleaning;
  • Perform cleaning tasks like sweeping, mopping, and scrubbing floors;
  • Assist with ordering and restocking of cleaning supplies and equipment; and
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Non-Competitive Appointment: Candidates must have the physical ability to perform the tasks of the position and communicate orally and in writing to exchange information.
