Job description

*** IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION CANDIDATE MUST BE SERVING PERMANENTLY IN THE TITLE OF CERTIFIED IT ADMINISTRATOR (LAN/WAN), OR BE REACHABLE ON THE OPEN-COMPETITIVE LIST, EXAM #1111.*** The New York City Department of Transportation’s (DOT) IT & Telecom division is seeking a junior-level network engineer to assist with the daily administration of the DOT network, with a primary focus on field Office network operations. DOT is a medium-sized organization with 6000 users across 80 sites in NYC, with over 400 network devices.

Under the direction of the Director of Infrastructure Services and in coordination and cooperation with the Network Infrastructure team, the successful candidate would be focused primarily on network Operations, but would also be responsible for the maintenance, configuration, and documentation of all network-related devices while complying with NYCDOT’s Cybersecurity Policies for baseline network device configurations for hardened security.

The candidate must possess an eager desire to learn along with a solid foundational understanding of network standards, communication protocols and a clear understanding of how devices communicate on an Ethernet topology.

The ideal candidate must possess a minimum certification of CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate).

Minimum Qualifications

Professional/vendor certification(s) in local area network administration that is required for the position to be filled. In addition, all candidates must have the following:

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, and two years of satisfactory full-time (not classroom based) experience in local area network and/or wide area network planning, design, configuration, installation, implementation, troubleshooting, integration, performance monitoring, maintenance, enhancement, and security management; or
  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and six years of satisfactory full-time (not classroom based) information technology experience of which at least 2 years must have been as described in "1" or
  • A satisfactory equivalent of education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above. Education may be substituted for experience on the basis that 30 undergraduate semester credits from an accredited college is equivalent to 6 months of experience. A master’s degree in computer science or a related field from an accredited college may be substitute for one year of experience. However, all candidates must have at least one year of satisfactory (not classroom based) full-time information technology experience as described in "1" above.

Note: In addition to meeting the minimum Qualification Requirements: Incumbents may be required to update existing and/or obtain additional professional industry-standard certification(s) for current and future technical environments(s) in which they may be assigned to work, as determined by the employing agency.

Preferred Skills

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Configure and deploy network switches, routers, Wireless devices, firewalls, and other devices as needed for DOT's Field business operations.
  • Rack and stack the network equipment and run and patch copper/fiber cabling in IDF & MDF as required.
  • Lift heavy equipment such as UPS and enterprise-class network switches for installation in racks or cabinets as needed. This equipment can weigh well over 50 pounds.
  • Maintain network devices on the latest tested and approved patch levels.
  • Document current network architecture and maintain these documents up to date as changes are made.
  • Monitor and Close daily incidents within our incident management portal within the approved SLAs.
  • Troubleshoot & resolve network-related issues across all DOT sites.
  • Preference will be given to candidate who possess a driver's license valid in the state of New York with no restrictions, and show a willingness to travel to various remote sites on a regular basis around the city as required. This license must be maintained throughout duration of employment in this position.
  • Valid CCNA Certification.
