The employee will serve as a Locksmith, at the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System, in New York, NY. Locksmiths adjust, troubleshoot, repair and install a wide variety of commercially manufactured locking devices including combination locks which are typically installed in such security units as safes, vaults, cabinets and chests.
Duties include, but may not be limited to the following: Performs maintenance, preventative maintenance, installation and repair of a variety of locking and latching devices, door closures, battery operated alarms and miscellaneous door, window and cabinetry hardware. Maintains security and locks for narcotic storage and medication storage. Installs and maintains window and door lock mechanisms. Inspects, repairs and installs all types and functions of locks throughout the medical center including doors, decks, lockers, cabinets, hinges and sliding doors, padlocks, electric panel locks and safety locks, tubular cylindrical, combination on emergency basis. Removes foreign objects from locks, such as matches, chewing gum, etc. Picks or otherwise defeating or bypassing locks when keys are lost or lock is inoperable, improvising and applying neutralization techniques that do not damage the locking devices and security containers or doors during lockout situation. Determines the application for installing and maintaining electronic locks and keying devices. Programs electronic locks to function within the parameters of the application, using lock specific hardware and software. Troubleshoots and repairs electronic locks and keying devices using electronic test and repair equipment. Determines, installs and maintains the correct door closer for a door size, weight, swing and operation. Troubleshoots and repairs or overhauls various types of door closures. Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
