Job description

  • Prepare, update, and maintain digital maps, engineering drawings, and geographic information system database (GIS).
  • Compile, review, and analyze spatial and engineering data from surveys, plans, aerial photography, GPS, LIDAR, and other mapping sources.
  • Assist in producing maps, exhibits, and graphics related to engineering, planning, transportation, drainage, utilities etc. for capital improvement projects.
  • Perform cartographic editing, digitizing, georeferencing, and quality control to ensure mapping accuracy and consistency.
  • Support survey crews by processing field data and incorporating survey information into mapping databases.
  • Maintain and update asset inventories, utility maps, parcel maps, and base maps.
  • Generate reports, map products, and data exports using GIS and CAD Software.
  • Maintain documentation, metadata, and records in accordance with departmental standards.
  • Follow applicable engineering, surveying, GIS, and drafting standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Assist Engineers with GIS related tasks and prepare GIS maps for various type of projects in Design, as necessary.
  • Archive construction completed projects, Traffic Control cases, and permits in ProjectWise
  • Assist Engineers in preparing Display Boards and drawings for public meetings under various projects, as necessary.
  • Investigate availability of aerial photogrammetry and base mapping for various projects in design.
  • Assist supervisor to prepare IT Design requests for on-boarding and off-boarding employees, software requests, and create ProjectWise accounts etc.

Typical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Preferred candidates should possess good knowledge of GIS Software, CAD software and as well as proficiency in computer programs such as Microsoft Office applications such as Excel, Access, etc.

Basic knowledge of surveying principles, GPS, spatial database, cartography, coordinate system, and digital mapping techniques.

Ability to analyze spatial data accurately and maintain detailed records.

Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department's response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

Minimum Qualifications

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).*

To be considered for appointment through NY HELPS, or 55 b/c, candidates must meet the minimum qualifications for this position. The qualifications are:

Six years of experience making recommendations and decisions relating to the selection, planning, and production of mapping projects and independent research and evaluation activities which require the knowledge and application of the technical principles and practices of GIS or photogrammetry.

Substitution: Associate degree may substitute for two years of specialized experience; bachelor's degree may substitute for four years of specialized experience; master's degree may substitute for five years of specialized experience.

Candidates may also be qualified for permanent competitive appointment if reachable from the appropriate Civil Service eligible list or eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.
