Job description

**CANDIDATES WHO ARE PERMANENT IN THE TITLE OF MOTOR VEHICLE OPERATOR, OR THOSE WHO ARE REACHABLE ON EXAM #8321 OR #6306 WILL BE CONSIDERED** The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The New York City Police Department strives to foster a safe and fair city through the strategic deployment of resources, focusing on both crime prevention and addressing quality-of-life concerns while building lasting community relationships.

The Criminal Justice Bureau (CJB) facilitates the safe, timely and efficient processing of all persons arrested in the City of New York. CJB is the operational liaison between the NYPD and multiple agencies within the criminal justice community working collaboratively in the arrest-to-arraignment process. CJB is comprised of five (5) Borough Court Sections, two (2) Court Monitoring Units, and a Bureau office. Borough Court Sections are responsible for the safe and humane processing of all persons arraigned within the City of New York. Court Monitoring Units are responsible for the administration and monitoring of eight (8) Traffic Violations Bureaus. In addition, CJB operates the mass arrest processing center to safely process large numbers of prisoners during major incidents stemming from demonstrations and civil disobedience.

The Criminal Justice Bureau is seeking a qualified Motor Vehicle Operator who will be expected to do the following:

  • Operate one or more types of department motor vehicles such as passenger car and prisoner transport van
  • May drive a truck carrying employees and material to and from work locations
  • May act as a chauffeur to an official
  • Checks the tires, oil and fuel of the vehicle, replenishes fluids as needed, and checks the vehicle to see that lights, horn and brakes appear to be operating properly
  • Reports any noticeable mechanical defects in the vehicle
  • Cleans the windows and interior and exterior of the vehicle
  • Changes tires or wheels ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: In compliance with federal Law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification document form upon hire.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience Requirements: There are no formal education or experience requirements.

Driver License Requirement: By the time you are appointed to this position, you must have a motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York. If you have moving violations, license suspension(s) or an accident record, you may be disqualified. This license must be maintained for the duration of your employment.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
