Job description

The Office of New Media and Cultural Communications is helping to transform the traditional press arm of the Mayor’s office into one that includes and engages new media, ensuring that Mayor Mamdani’s agenda and achievements reach and mobilize New Yorkers who have historically been left out of the governing process. The Office oversees constituency media relations and ensures a consistent narrative reaches all New York audiences and engages new media and influencers to pitch and deliver stories to the places where New Yorkers get their news.

The Problems You’ll Solve: The New Media Press Assistant will support the execution of the administration’s new media strategy — helping coordinate outreach, manage logistics, track coverage, and ensure seamless execution of new media opportunities. This role will play a key part in supporting team operations across a high-volume creator and media ecosystem — helping manage intake, maintain systems, and ensure strong coordination across the Director of New Media and Cultural Communications and Deputy Press Secretaries.

  • Conduct ongoing research to identify creators, new media outlets, neighborhood pages, and other online partners across key geographies, communities, and verticals (e.g., neighborhood-based accounts, parenting, food, culture, finance, etc.).
  • Support intake of inbound interest, including reviewing submissions, assessing audience alignment, and flagging high-potential partners.
  • Build and maintain detailed creator and outlet databases, including contact information, audience metrics, geographic reach, content niche, audience demographics, past coverage, and relationship status.
  • Track and categorize creators by engagement type (e.g., scheduled interviews, pitched content, network amplification, organic coverage).
  • Support outreach to creators and new media outlets, including drafting emails, managing follow-ups, and maintaining communication pipelines.
  • Coordinate logistics for creator interviews, events, and press moments, including confirmations, briefing distribution, and day-of coordination.
  • Maintain intake and tracking systems (forms, spreadsheets, CRM tools) to ensure visibility into pipeline, participation, and coverage outcomes.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
