Job description

The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody.

Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities.

The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.

The DOC is seeking to hire a Senior Cook whose tasks will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Supervising the daily work performance and training of cooks and auxiliary kitchen workers.
  • Applying departmental procedures applicable to controlling food and other supplies.
  • Distributing prepared foods and maintaining general cleanliness in the kitchen and related areas, including refrigerators and storerooms.
  • Conferring with the dietitian regarding menus, quantity recipes and assignments.
  • Participating in all cooking activities.
  • Direct and instruct inmates assigned as kitchen helpers.
  • Performing related work and special projects as may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Elementary school graduation plus three years of cooking experience; or
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to that described in "1" above.

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.

Additional Information
