Job description

The Service & Repair Assistant (Motor Equipment) performs a variety of semiskilled maintenance, repair, and related activities as assigned. Assists with skilled tasks under supervision of a journey-level individual.

Performs routine tasks in the repair, maintenance and servicing of automotive and mechanical equipment, such as replacing wheel bearings and removing and replacing starters, fuel pumps, water pumps, gas tanks, carburetors, exhaust system components, shock absorbers, springs, and radiators.

Performs preventive maintenance inspections of vehicles and equipment following the established preventive maintenance schedules for the equipment.

Performs minor engine repairs as well as tune-ups according to manufacturer’s specifications.

Assists a journey-level mechanical trades individual in major mechanical repairs including disassembling and assembling engines, components, and mechanical equipment, cleaning parts, and inspecting for wear.

Assists with maintenance repairs and adjusts ignition systems, voltage regulators, alternators, starters and lights.

Assists with maintaining, repairing, and adjusting or replacing chassis assemblies including frames, springs, steering, dump bodies, brakes, hydraulic lifts, drives, and controls as well as aligning front ends, balancing wheels, and mounting, dismounting, servicing and repairing tires of all types and sizes.

Assists in repairing, rebuilding and maintaining radiators, cooling systems, and engines including valves, bearings, shafts, rings, oil pumps, fuel pumps, injectors, and timing mechanisms.

Assists in repairing and servicing conventional and automatic transmissions, including clutch assemblies, differentials, transfer cases, torque converters, and gear trains.

Repairs various gasoline-powered chain saws, weed whackers, small concrete mixers, power spreaders, sprayers and other light equipment used in Thruway maintenance operations.

Maintains cleanliness and general housekeeping of the garage area.

Minimum Qualifications

Two years of experience in mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson or completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course.

When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
