Under the supervision of the Executive Deputy Director for the Office of Emergency Management (OEM), this position is responsible for coordinating and managing DHSES emergency services field staff as well as establishing and maintaining working relationships with local and county elected officials and public safety partners. The Deputy Director provides regional leadership, coordination, and communication support before, during, and after emergencies and potential emergency situations. Candidates must be self-starters with the ability to build collaborative relationships with external partners. Based upon the nature of this work, the acceptable candidate must be available to deploy and provide executive level briefs on a 24 hour/7 day-a-week basis, potentially for extended periods of time.
Typical daily tasks include but are not limited to:
Eleven years of relevant emergency management experience* in a police, fire, or first responder agency or emergency management organization.
Substitution: A bachelor's degree in an acceptable field may substitute for four years of general experience, and a J.D. or master's degree may substitute for one additional year of general experience; a PhD may substitute for two years of relevant experience. One year of relevant managerial or command level leadership directing and overseeing subordinates may be substituted for up to four years of general emergency management experience.
*The candidate must have demonstrated the ability to interact with relevant stakeholders, including during times of an emergency, such as members of the public, federal, state, county, and local first responders, emergency management officials, elected officials, and the media. The candidate must manage and lead high profile projects and programs, the ability to respond to executive and external stakeholder requests for information during ongoing operations, as well as excellent communication skills, good judgement, and ability to prioritize.
