Job description

The Agency You’ll Join: The New York City Mayor’s Office is responsible for overseeing city services throughout the five boroughs, coordinating public agencies and departments, and managing public property. The Team You’ll Work With: The New York City Mayor’s Office of Correspondence & Ceremonial Affairs plays a vital role in providing the Mayor and our Administration with insight into the views, experiences, and concerns of everyday New Yorkers, as well as in connecting constituents to City services and keeping them informed about the Mayor’s bold agenda of affordability, good governance, public safety, and a life of dignity and opportunity for all. The office also receives and tracks gifts sent to the Mayor and drafts Mayoral greetings and ceremonial commendations. The responsibilities of Correspondence team members involve writing in the Mayor’s voice to communicate the policies, priorities, and goals of our Administration; ample research, editing, and fact-checking in a deadline-driven environment; familiarity with the innerworkings City government; an understanding of the political landscape, and a deep knowledge of the five boroughs.

The Problems You’ll Solve: The Staff Writer will be part of the Mayor's Office of Correspondence writing team, responsible for crafting language and drafting all Mayoral correspondence in a deadline-driven environment.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Write certificates, letters, greetings, citations, and proclamations for specific focus areas.
  • Conduct vetting of organizations/requestors within focus areas to ensure accuracy of written content.
  • Collaborate with Senior Researcher and Senior Editor on the production of original text that aligns with the voice and values of the Mayor.
  • Utilizing the Intranet Quorum (IQ) process management system through which correspondence requests are digitally tracked and archived.
  • Completing special writing assignments, as assigned.

About You:

  • You will research and draft letters and emails from the Mayor to constituents and other correspondents.
  • You will draft policy and issue form letters.
  • You will support the Correspondence team of Staff Writers by providing writing and research assistance.
  • You will complete additional writing assignments, as needed.
  • You can write concisely, quickly, accurately, and confidently across a variety of subjects.
  • You can work independently and as part of a team.
  • You can independently research and fact-check people and topics when needed, which is a must.
  • You have strong problem solving and decision making skills.
  • You have good deductive reasoning skills.
  • You have the ability to perform under deadline pressure when it arises.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree is required, and a writing test will be administered.
  • 2-3 years of demonstrated writing ability within a business setting.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and one year of satisfactory, administrative, analytical, research, service, support, or computer related experience; or
  • A satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Skills

  • You have knowledge of New York City government structure, or the ability to quickly acquire that knowledge, is a plus.
  • You have flexibility, adaptability, and a strong work ethic within a deadline-driven environment is a must.
  • You have flexibility to handle urgent or time sensitive correspondence.
  • You have an understanding of public service ethics and confidentiality requirements.
  • You have an understanding of the Chicago Manual of Style.
  • You have reasonable computer literacy and proficiency, and a command of the Microsoft Office suite.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of the interview.
