*** This position is open to candidates who have taken and passed Exam 2071.*** The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is the largest Fire Department in the United States and universally is recognized as the world's busiest and most highly skilled emergency response agency. The Department's main goal is to provide fire protection, emergency medical care, and other critical public safety services to residents and visitors in the five boroughs.

The Bureau of Fire Prevention cultivates a safer city for its citizens, visitors and first responders by preventing loss of life and property damage from fire and other emergencies. We accomplish this 24/7 by identifying fire and life safety hazards; creating, revising, and enforcing the New York City Fire Code; reviewing plans for critical systems designed to protect and alert building occupants; licensing qualified companies to install and service fire protection equipment and systems; certifying individuals to monitor fire safety conditions; and educating individuals and businesses about fire safety. In addition, the Bureau of Fire Prevention is critical partner with the Bureau of Fire Operations (Firefighters) and Bureau of Fire Investigations (Fire Marshals), providing assistance and guidance during post-fire incidents and investigations; and coordinating with other City agencies on matters concerning fire and life safety. The Bureau consists of Fire Protection Inspectors, lawyers, engineers, explosives experts, and Fire Officers work together to save lives in New York City.
The Fire Department, City of New York (FDNY), seeks two (2) full-time Administrative Inspectors (Electrical) Non-Managerial in the Bureau of Fire Prevention. Reporting directly to the Deputy Director of the Fire Alarm Inspection Unit, the selected candidates will:
- Direct a subdivision of field inspectors who are performing life safety and emergency system inspections in public and private buildings and/or monitoring central stations to ensure conformance with codes, standards, plans, and specifications.
- Interpret New York City codes, rules and regulations.
- Perform administrative duties, including evaluation of field reports, re-considerations, technical inquiries and meetings with design engineers/contractors.
- Monitor high-level projects.
- Conduct presentations.
- May serve as departmental representative for citywide code committees. Perform related duties as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
- Seven years of full-time satisfactory experience as an electrician, designer, or inspector of electrical installations for light, heat and/or power distribution, traffic signals, fire alarm detection or communication systems, at least eighteen months of which must have been in a managerial, administrative or supervisory capacity; or
- Five years of experience as described in “1” above, at least 18 months of which must have been in a managerial, administrative or supervisory capacity and one of the following: (a) 60 credits towards a degree in electrical engineering or electrical engineering technology from an accredited college or university; or (b) Two years of full-time training in an acceptable electrical program in an accredited technical school; or
- Completion of an apprentice program, at least three years in length, in the electrical trade or electrical inspection, and either: (a) four years of experience as described in “1” above, or (b) two years of experience as described in “1” above plus either 60 credits or two years of education as described in ”2” above.
- A license as a professional engineer or registered architect issued pursuant to the New York State Education Law, and at least two years of experience as described in “1” above, at least 18 months of which must have been in a managerial, administrative or supervisory capacity; or 5.Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1,” “2,” or “3” above. All candidates must have at least two years of experience as described in “1” above, at least 18 months of which must have been in a managerial, administrative or supervisory capacity.
Preferred Skills
- Excellent knowledge of life safety systems.
- Excellent knowledge of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Rules of the City of New York (RCNY) and Administrative Code.
- Previous supervisory experience.
- Excellent verbal and written communication.
