Job description

Under the general supervision of the Professional Engineer (Civil), SG-24, the incumbent may perform journey-level work in the primary trade of heavy equipment operation. Duties may include both skilled and semi-skilled tasks, ensuring operational efficiency and adherence to safety standards. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Operate and maintain a variety of construction equipment, including but not limited to: tractors with lowboy trailer, heavy dump trucks, front end loaders, skid steer loaders, backhoes, rollers, excavators, and bulldozers.
  • Change oil, fuel, spark plugs, air and hydraulic fluids; check fluid levels, tire pressure, safety devices and control mechanisms of machines prior to operation.
  • Perform maintenance and repair of infrastructure, including, water/wastewater, storm drainage, electrical systems, plumbing, and related infrastructure.
  • Perform project planning and coordination, layout procedures, blueprint reading, and purchasing.
  • Conduct inspections to diagnose issues and determine corrective actions associated with equipment and/or job-related activities.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of hand tools, equipment, and vehicles necessary to complete assigned tasks.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable safety regulations and codes.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) related to assigned job tasks.
  • May perform medium to heavy manual labor as part of daily tasks. Must be physically able to lift up to 60 pounds.
  • Collaborate with other staff, contractors, and vendors to complete work efficiently.
  • Complete work orders, track materials used, and document progress in maintenance systems.
  • May supervise subordinate staff or assist with training.
  • The incumbent will also be expected to be deployed to perform work during emergency events as directed by the State Emergency Management Operations Center and/or NYS OPRHP management.

Minimum Qualifications

Four years of full-time experience in heavy equipment operation under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.

When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.

*If verifiable, we will accept and prorate part-time and volunteer experience.
