Job description

Training Specialists 2 (Mental Hygiene) serve as the overall assistant to the training manager of an institution, facility, or region. Develop and deliver major segments of institution and community training programs to improve the knowledge and abilities of those caring for and treating individuals with mental illness or developmental disabilities in institutional and community settings.

This will be a Region 4 title shared between Hudson Valley DDSO and Taconic DDSO. The following items are strongly preferred from the incumbent:

  • Be a Master SCIP-R Trainer
  • Support each volunteer agency in identifying, coaching and supporting Instructor Trainers for SCIP-R in Hudson Valley and Taconic.
  • Support private agencies in their transition from SCIP-R to PROMOTE.
  • Maintain database of SCIP-R instructors and their status in region 4 to ensure they meet criteria to receive annual recertifications.
  • Hold annual reviews of SCIP-R curriculum to ensure SCIP-R integrity and consistency across region

  • Host SCIP-R Instructor Trainer classes annually.
  • Support private agencies in developing new and modified physical SCIP-R interventions.
  • Communicate with fellow Master SCIP-R Trainers to ensure statewide consistency.
  • Communicate concerns and progress with SCIP-R to both Talent Development and Training directors in Reg

  • Work towards becoming a Master Trainer in PROMOTE if not yet fully trained.
  • Teach PROMOTE to OPWDD staff as needed.
  • Be responsible for supervising at least one OPWDD staff person.
  • Be able to travel between Hudson Valley and Taconic approximately 50% of the time during shift.

Minimum Qualifications

Promotion: one year of permanent competitive service as a Training Specialist 1 Mental Hygiene and reachable on the Civil Service eligible list.

Open Competitive: Bachelor's degree and three years of professional experience developing and delivering major segments of institution and community training programs to improve the knowledge and abilities of those caring for and treating individuals with mental illness or developmental disabilities in institutional and community settings.

Substitution:

A Juris Doctor, master's or higher degree in a related field can substitute for one year of specialized experience.

Transfer: Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55-b/c status in the posted title and be eligible for lateral transfer; OR be eligible to transfer via Section 70.1, 70.4, or 52.6 of Civil Service Law. The transfer cannot be a second consecutive transfer resulting in an advancement of more than two salary grades.
