Sample summary

Use the structure, not the exact wording.

Service plumber with over 7 years in residential repair, running 6 to 8 calls a day out of a stocked van. Handles drain stoppages, water heater replacement, repipes and fixture work, and explains the diagnosis and the price to the homeowner before any work starts.

Why this example works

- The summary quickly signals relevant experience and hiring value.

- The bullets focus on outcomes and clear execution instead of vague task lists.

- The skills align with the language employers commonly use in job descriptions.

Sample experience bullets

Keep your own bullets specific, measurable, and role-relevant.

- Ran 6 to 8 residential service calls a day, diagnosing the fault on site and quoting the repair before starting work.

- Cleared kitchen, laundry and main line stoppages with cable and jetting equipment, then camera-inspected any line that backed up twice.

- Replaced tank and tankless water heaters, including gas venting, expansion tanks, pans and drain corrections.

- Kept the van stocked and the write-ups clean so callbacks stayed rare and homeowners knew what was replaced and why.

Common mistakes

- Listing plumbing duties without saying how many calls a day the job actually carried.

- Listing repairs without explaining how you found the cause of the problem.

- Forgetting the customer half of service work: quoting, explaining options and leaving the house clean.

- Blending new construction and service experience together when shops hire for one or the other.

Experience

Service Plumber

Residential plumbing and drain company (van-based service) · Sacramento, CA · 2022 to Present

  • Ran 6 to 8 residential service calls a day, diagnosing the fault on site and quoting the repair before starting work.
  • Cleared kitchen, laundry and main line stoppages with cable and jetting equipment, then camera-inspected any line that backed up twice.
  • Replaced tank and tankless water heaters, including gas venting, expansion tanks, pans and drain corrections.
  • Kept the van stocked and the write-ups clean so callbacks stayed rare and homeowners knew what was replaced and why.
Plumber

Regional plumbing contractor (repair and repipe division) · Sacramento, CA · 2020 to 2022

  • Repiped 20 to 25 single-story homes a year in copper and PEX, working around families who stayed in the house.
  • Diagnosed slab leaks with acoustic and pressure testing, and rerouted lines overhead where the slab could not be opened.
  • Replaced roughly 60 water heaters a year, correcting venting, expansion tanks and drain pans that had been left wrong.
  • Wrote up every call with photos and two lines of notes so the office could bill it and the next technician knew the history.
Plumbing Apprentice

New construction plumbing contractor (tract housing) · Roseville, CA · 2018 to 2020

  • Roughed in waste, vent and water lines for 3 to 5 houses a week on a production tract crew.

How to adapt this sample

  • Say where you stand on licensing in your own words: apprentice with hours logged, journeyman, or working under someone else's contractor license. What each title requires varies by state, so name the state that issued yours and the year rather than implying it carries elsewhere. If a test is already booked, give the date instead of leaving the line blank.
  • Replace the call volume with yours and name the mix. Six drain calls is a different day from two repipes, and a service manager is working out what they can dispatch you to alone. Break a normal week down honestly: stoppages, leaks, water heaters, fixture swaps, repipes, and the jobs you handed off to someone senior.
  • Name your equipment and materials the way a supply house would. Cable machines, jetters, inspection cameras, press tools and line locators all belong on the page, as do copper, PEX, cast iron and ABS or PVC.
  • Keep two lines about the customer. Service plumbing is sold in a hallway with the homeowner standing there, so quoting the job, explaining the options and leaving the bathroom cleaner than you found it are billable skills. Add your callback rate, your review average or repeat requests if the shop tracked any of them.

Plumber resume FAQ

A short summary, your licensing or apprenticeship standing, and recent plumbing work written as calls and jobs rather than duties. Keep it to one page. Separate service from new construction on every entry, because shops hire for one or the other and a mixed paragraph reads as neither. Give the call volume a normal day carried, the job types inside it, and the materials you work in, such as copper, PEX, cast iron and PVC. Add the equipment you run alone, from cable machines to inspection cameras, and finish with the customer-facing side: quoting on site and closing out the ticket.

Drain cleaning and jetting, leak diagnosis, water heater installation, repiping in copper and PEX, fixture and valve repair, gas line work, and on-site quoting. Name the diagnostic skills first, since anyone can swap a part and fewer can find the fault under a slab. List the equipment by name: cable machines, jetters, inspection cameras, press tools, locators and pressure testers. Add code and permit familiarity without claiming a jurisdiction you have not worked in. Then keep two lines for the homeowner side of the job, because a plumber who explains the repair and leaves a clean bathroom gets requested by name.

Use standard headings, single-column formatting, no graphics, and export as PDF or Word. Put the license or apprenticeship line as plain text near the top, with the issuing state and the year, and keep one position per block with the employer descriptor, location and dates on their own line. Skip tables and two-column layouts, which scramble your history when software reads the file. Write call counts and job volumes as digits with the period attached, such as per day or per year, spell out material abbreviations where the posting does, and confirm the exported document opens as selectable text rather than an image.

Yes, and none of the fictional sample above ends up in your file. You begin with an empty resume in the recommended design and enter your own shops, call volumes, dates and licensing. As you type, AI suggestions offer wording you can accept, change or ignore, so the finished bullets still sound like a plumber wrote them. Export to PDF or Word free of charge once the page is right, and change the design or page size later without touching the content. Keeping a second copy aimed at service work and one at new construction takes only a few minutes.

Put it in the role itself rather than in a note at the bottom. Say how the rotation ran, for example one week in four, how many after-hours calls a typical rotation brought, and what you were expected to handle alone at two in the morning: sewage backups, burst supply lines, no-hot-water calls or gas odors. Add your response time if the shop measured it. On-call willingness often decides between two candidates with the same skills, so state plainly whether you are available for nights, weekends and storm work, and do not offer availability you cannot keep.
